Aleister Crowley: The Biography
by Tobias Churchton

This is the very best biography of Crowley available.

Have you ever tried to explain to a non-occultist why you find Crowley worth reading? He is, for the average person, just a glorified delinquent: a sex crazed satanist addicted to drugs, plagued by bad teeth, bad hair, and a bad reputation. This book is a massive step towards a remedy for that disconnect between what is generally believed about The Beast and what we, as students of Magick, understand about him.

This books aims, with huge amounts of stuff you have never before heard or seen, to show you the man behind the scenes. It gives details of Crowley's family heritage, his philosophical goals, and his struggles as an individual. If Symonds made him a devil and Grant made him a god, this book shows his human side.

It describes Crowley's relevance to far more than the occult. He is presented as a champion of social change, sexual freedom, and values that are now taken for granted but which were in his day quite out of place. The author frequently references those who knew Crowley, and his understanding of Thelema is clearly shepherded by the OTO and other initiates with an insider's viewpoint.

If you are interested in Crowley, I heartily recommend this biography over the others available.
