Belief in God a Prerequisite?

Would not believing in god, while simultaneously believing in the efficacy of doing rituals and having the theory resonate with our intuition, be detrimental to magickal practice? I have read many occult authors say that god cannot be comprehended by us or at least absolutely, so doesn't that mean we cannot know god beyond the here and now? Does it make sense to then be agnostic in this case? Did any of you guys start out atheistic or agnostic and then eventually experientially start believing?
