Of interest.

"A New Sicilian Curse Corpus: A Blueprint for a Geographical and Chronological Analysis of Defixiones from Sicily"

by Thea Sommerschield (Graduate student, University of Oxford)

Abstract: In this paper I will offer an analysis of the geographical and chronological diffusion of the practice of defixio writing, attested in Sicily between 550 BCE and 200 CE. Sicilian evidence for cursing has, on one hand, been the subject of largely linguistically-focussed studies and, on the other hand, never been collected in a single, updated corpus (despite several attempts having been made to this end). The present work aims to expand and update this situation, in order to pose new questions to Sicilian defixiones thanks to the compiling of a new digital corpus of the Sicilian evidence, which may be analysed, geographically mapped and chronologically parsed.
