YHVH as Adonai

Lest not ye take the Lord's name in vain, find therein Adonai, King of the Earth.
It is tradition to denote YHVH with the vowels of Adonai. Why is this? It is a reminder that YHVH is not separated from the air we breath, from the fire which keeps us warm, from the water which gives us strength, and from the earth which provides us plenty.
יהוה = אדמה
