A list of reference material for Hekate research.

This is about Hekate but not a specific discussion item so not sure where to place it. She has come up in a few discussions so thought other's might find this useful. It's a list of reference item's I've put together over time for myself. I've shared it before on other sites so people may have seen it before. If not allowed please go ahead and delete it. Hopefully it will be of use to others.

I've had this for some time and though it might be useful to others who are sworn to Hekate or at least interested in her. These references may deal directly with Hekate as a Goddess or indirectly upon various spheres of influence. I have purposely omitted some items due to language usage or audience focus, aimed at 3 - 10 years of age type thing. It's a large list and reflects my own biases and interests regarding the subject of reference material for Hekate / Hecate.

Wow. That is the bibliography for a doctorate on her right there. Thank you so much for sharing. I have picked up

06. Hekate Liminal Rites: A Study of the rituals, magic and symbols of the torch-bearing Triple Goddess of the Crossroads by Sorita d'Este, 2009, 194 pages, ISBN 1905297238

and

08. HEKATE Her Sacred Fires by Sorita d'Este, 2010, 308 pages, ISBN-13: 9781905297351 // ISBN: 1905297351

And have found them both to be incredibly useful so far.
Your mileage may vary - and that's ok

Thanks.

There is much to say about Hekate, with little actually being said here and elsewhere. Have you looked into Tuba Veneris?

Is your list ordered in any way? Which books would you particularly recommend?

Well, I think it fits decently well as a nice resource in the PGM subforum. While certainly she's isn't limited to that current, it's probably as close a fit as we have.

Nice list. Maybe we can start folks adding in their suggestions as well.
Cheers,

This list really wasn't designed to say much about Hekate individually. It's simply a listing of research material and various books about her or pertaining to things associated with her. Figure it really wasn't my intent to discuss each item individually as my own biases would heavily influence any synopsis / reviews of them and the validity of their content. The only basic rating of content I did do was that the items in section 1c I personally think are poor examples and should be avoided but I included them as other's do rate them highly. Otherwise I tried to place the titles by some category listing useful to me and perhaps useful to others who might try to find them.

For instance the book THE TEMPLE OF HEKATE by Tara Sanchez is an awful book in my opinion. Her chapter on Divination Dice is bs considering Hekate never had a site with divination dice. But this one is Divination Dice with a Tarot influence coupled to it. There are references to Divination Dice in a few market squares and at a few of the Oracle sites but none of Hekate's sites. Nor is Hekate really associated with Divination. Basic filler to fill out a book. That's just one example from that book. But some claim it's a great book in their opinion and find it useful.

No particular order was assigned to placement as I developed the listing over time. As I gathered material for my own library or discovered material I wanted to obtain and ensure I kept the title and required numbers and such I added them to the list. The only major changes being moving them to other area's if I discovered for instance they were JSTOR's, research papers, Thesis or Graduate Papers or submissions within a book or article vice being a complete book itself.

As far as recommendations, to be honest I usually go by what a person is asking about not just make blanket recommendations. I personally think that is one of the problems that plague the community. People are quick to give advise on what to read, but don't really take the time to ask about what the person(s) is / are actually trying to find out about. However, again that is just my opinion so other's may disagree.

Regarding talking about Hekate and specifics I love to talk about her to be honest. Have more than a few pages of things I've either written or researched and created papers on about individual subjects. Some I share, some I don't due to copyright issues or file size issues. Other's I share but usually via messenger or email as to be honest most don't want to discuss them to that depth or degree.

It's like the theory that Hekate is associated with the three headed dog Kerberus / Cerberus but she is also associated with a swamp exit and the Hydra. One of the reason the Chaldean's at times said she was serpent headed and one of her domain influences is the water. Yet her domain is the fresh and coastal waters not the deep waters that Poseidon rules. It ties into the idea that she can bring the dead into and out of Hades without passing by Kerberus / Cerberus or paying the boatman when she is associated with the restless dead and pushing them. Sorry don't have the image before me but also ties into one image of Hermes leading Persephone with Hekate behind her into the upper world and looks like they rise from the swamps. Which also ties into the land lying desolate and barren / decayed while Persephone was in the underworld.

I've heard of the Tuba Veneris but really have not looked into it.

monsnoleedra, I believe if you wrote a book about Hekate, you could be acknowledged as the best expert on that subject .And how do you want us to call you shortly, because it is very difficult to remember your name?

Not sure i'd qualify as an expert on the subject, but I appreciate the though.

I've though of writing a book on her but my ancient Hellene really sucks. So bad in fact might as well say it doesn't exist so to me that means your always at the mercy of others to translate things. So from a novice perspective not particularly a bad place but if you want to be an authority not a good place to come from.

I personally think that is what hurts so many pagan authors, they come from a place of being a novice. They can write, and many do, about their own spirituality and beliefs, which there is nothing wrong about that. Many of the anthologies in fact deal with those type stories and accounts. Sorita d'Este probably has been one of the biggest in that aspect though Bibliotheca Alexandrina published an anthology as well.

Though I suppose part of it is I am to demanding of my own work and think it never good enough. That's the perfectionist in me, well that or the analyst in me.

Name wise I have people on others sites just compact it down to MSLD or just call me Mons for short. I'm pretty easy on that part and don't get all bent out of shape on the name thing.
