Just tried exercise #1 last night

It's amazing how hard it can be to concentrate on one thought for 5 minutes. I tried to simplify it and just concentrate on a very simple thought like "the sun is yellow", and not only would I completely go off rail into different thoughts of current issues, but at times I would forget entirely what I was concentrating on initially which was "the sun is yellow". Any good tips to learn to control the mind?
