Anyone here familiar with Quimbanda and the Exu's?

I am curious to know a bit about it but most if any info is in portuguese. For instance are the Exu's deities? Or are they demonic spirits?
Some people have commented that they are spirits of dead practioners whom have bad temperments. What confuses me about that is usually spirits of a higher state of being are capable of so much more. How are spirits of dead people capable of such great dangers that people say it would be easier dealing with the Goetia demons than exu's spirits.
Can anyone clear up the confusion?
