auto new message notice

Is it technically possible to have a sign showing up when a new post has been posted in a thread we're following ?
Something like facebook notices when someone post a new message to a thread we've susbcribed to, with a small red letter appearing at the top ?
If we keep a window open on SA we have to refresh it to see if there's some new content. With this 'FB' like sign, we would be warned automatically.
It would be so convenient
