If you still live in a notion where everyone has ONE person meant for them, you are putting way too much self important pressures on your relationships for them to be genuine. This can breed the kind of on again off again fighting cycles you are talking about.
The fact is humans have no guarantee they will be together unless they decide it - and it is best that decision be consensual.
Just figure out what you want, lay that out, and he is down with that, work to make it happen: TOGETHER.
