In the Viking age, enemies often found themselves the target of a Nidstang runic curse.
These involved the use of a nine foot wooden pole, known as a Niding pole.
Also referred to as Nithstong or Scorn-Post.
On the pole various destructive runes were carved.
A horse's head was placed on top of the pole presumably facing the enemy.
The horse being sacred to the Norse gods.
The goal was to drive away all the earth spirits and leave the area spiritually dead and empty.
Here is an example of a Nidstang runic curse placed upon royalty that drove them from the land:
"Here I place this "Nidstang" ("curse-pole"), and turneth it against King Eirik and Queen Gunnhild
- turneth I this against all the gnomes and little people of the land, that they may all be lost, not finding their homes,
until they drive King Eirik and Queen Gunnhild out of the country."
Please discuss these Niding poles and your experiences with them.
