Shadow Workings

I was reading through the posts here and came across something that an admin posted that got me thinking.
He was talking about how light work is good, but the real healing lies in shadow work and facing your fears while confronting challenges.
As of late, I've been having a dilemma where I'm starting to believe that the other kinds of entities people generally call demons may not be what I thought them to.
So my question is, since this is an advanced magick forum, do some of you experienced practitioners know of any reputable texts on shadow work? I'm not specifically talking about summoning demons, more on working with your internal darkness and shadow to reach a state of enlightenment or empower myself in a positive manner.
