Experience with a custom spell

Lately I've been working on making some custom spells, with varying degrees of success. I've discovered that the focus and emotion invested in the spell when first writing it seem to be more important than the focus and emotion when casting the spell, in terms of success. For those of you who have also written spells, do you find this to be the case as well?
