Shape of Hebrew Letters

I think to myself, back in the days when the hebrew language and letters were being designed and formed into their respective shapes, by the designers of their time, there may have been a reason as to why the designers of the 'letters' or 'glyphs', shaped the hebrew letters into the forms that they eventually settled upon.

Bearing this in mind, can anybody share any insight into the reason why the letters were formed in the way they were formed? Is there any reason or logic that underpins the basis for designing the letter Yod as it appears, and so forth with every other letter? Why is Vav designed the way it is?

Do these shapes reveal anything about direction within the cube of space? Do the letters imply a movement of energy from one point to another, or is there some other symbolic knowledge/truth being revealed merely by following the shape of the letters, or alternatively, are the shapes of the letters merely arbitrary glyphs?

Any experience or pointers to external resources on this matter will be much appreciated.
