The sub elements/sub elemental rulers in Western magic

Enochian seems to utilise the sub elements or the sub elementals. Is the work of John Dee the first written examples of such orders of being?
I note that there appears to be a hiatus before the rise of the GD where they work witht e sub elements via the Tatvas. I always thought that this knowledge came via Rama Prasad’s book “Nature’s finer forces”. Are there earliest writings in Western magic that allude to these sub elements?
